The trails of Huntsville State Park came alive once again as runners gathered for the annual Rocky Raccoon 100 Mile and 50 Mile races, hosted by Tejas Trails. Known as one of the premier ultramarathons in the country, the Rocky Raccoon draws athletes from across the nation who are ready to test their endurance, grit, and determination on the scenic East Texas course.
The race features a well-maintained, predominantly flat and fast trail system winding through towering pine forests and around the serene waters of Lake Raven. While the terrain may not be mountainous, the distance alone makes this event a true challenge. The 100-mile runners tackled multiple loops through the forest, managing pacing, nutrition, and mental strength through long daylight hours and deep into the night. Meanwhile, the 50-mile participants pushed their limits over an equally demanding course, proving that “only” 50 miles is still an extraordinary accomplishment.
Cool morning air gave way to warmer afternoon temperatures, creating changing race conditions that tested strategy and resilience. Aid stations staffed by enthusiastic volunteers provided critical support, offering encouragement, fuel, and much-needed smiles along the way. The sense of community was evident from start to finish, with crews, families, and fellow runners cheering each athlete forward.
Every finisher earned their accomplishment through months—if not years—of dedicated training. Crossing that finish line, whether at 50 or 100 miles, represents more than just distance covered; it symbolizes perseverance, discipline, and heart.
Congratulations to all the runners who took on the Rocky Raccoon 100 Mile and 50 Mile race—what an incredible achievement! Your hard work and determination embody the spirit of ultrarunning, and your success made this year’s event at Huntsville State Park another unforgettable chapter in Texas trail racing.
